The writing is weak, the breaking of the fourth wall (clearly intended to be charming) comes across as hand-fisted and gimmicky, but these aren't even my main problems with the adaptation: my main issue is that the core character of Anne Elliot is changed completely, and what is changed leaves very little of the tentative magic of the original text. The film makes use of a sprinkling of banter, sure, and it could be argued that there is some chemistry between the two leads, but the predominant themes of yearning, regret, perseverance and succumbing to societal pressures seem to take the backburner heavily. One of the things that makes Anne Elliot such an interesting Austen lead is the ways in which she differs from other the author's other, younger and earlier-written protagonists. The sometimes agonizing self-awareness and regret that comes as one lives, the quiet richness of her internal world, is unfortunately nowhere to be found in this adaptation. The film uses very surface-level tactics to engage it's audience— perhaps the most successful is in the visuals & costuming, which are undeniably delightful— and ultimately falls flat.
